So Long 2010!

365 days ago, we were underneath the Golden Gate Bridge ringing in the New Year.

We had lots of breaks, cracks and tears in 2010.

We also had lots laughs, smiles and joy!

Happy New Year's to all!  May your 2011 be filled with health, happiness, lots of laughter and joy!

Aquatherapy

Dan took his first steps today since 10/16/2010.  He took them in the pool at aquatherapy.

In the pool, a patient only uses/feels 15-20% of their total body weight, which allows for exercises that otherwise would not be possible at this stage.

Below are some images from his first day in the pool at aquatherapy.  They use a chair lift to lift him over into the pool since he can not walk on his own or climb the stairs into or out of the pool.

Yes, you see this correctly... he is on an underwater treadmill.  Genius!

Raider Ranch

As you all know, Mom and Dan are currently staying at Raider Ranch in Lubbock.  Several people have asked about Raider Ranch and there seem to be some misunderstandings and misconceptions about what type of facility Raider Ranch is.

Raider Ranch is an active, retirement community.  Think of it as a gated community that only allows those 55 and older to live within the gates.  Raider Ranch is not a medical facility.  It is not a nursing home or a rehabilitation facility.   And while Raider Ranch does have an assisted living facility very near here, Mom and Dan are not staying in the assisted living facility.

Raider Ranch is for those 55 and older who are "RBC."  RBC is Renter By Choice.  These individuals are still fully capable of living on their own, they have just reached a point in their life where they no longer wish to deal with home maintenance, yard care and such.

Raider Ranch has one and two bedroom apartments in varying floor plans.  The price is "all-inclusive" to include all utilities including electric, gas, water, cable, phone and long distance.  They have full time maintenance for everything from changing a light bulb in the apartment (yes, I'm serious) to managing a pesky faucet and such.  The "all-inclusive" rent even includes a house-keeper.  (Mom reports that theirs is super-nice and gorgeous.) They also receive a monthly allowance to use in the dining room, Starbucks or spa.

Raider Ranch has an activity director to coordinate social functions, outings and games.  There is also a fitness director, a chef who runs the dining room downstairs, a Starbucks, a bar and a spa--to name just a few of the 'perks.'

They also allow any visitors who wish to come spend the night the option to rent a "guest suite" to stay in.  Their "guest suites" are furnished one and two bedroom apartments.

Again, there is no 'medical' assistance here.  Mom and Dan are staying here because they needed a place to stay while Dan healed, before he could go into a Rehab facility or hospital.  They needed a place with easy access to the hospital and doctor's offices.  They also needed a place to stay that was handicap accessible.  Raider Ranch has a handful of handicap accessible apartments.  Raider Ranch has also been ideal since there are social activities that they could take part in without having to leave the premises.

Below are some images of Raider Ranch.  Enjoy the "virtual tour!"

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas from all of us here at Raider Ranch!

It's Christmas Eve, Mom is in the kitchen cooking and Dan has been MIA since we returned home from the grocery store.  He just came in and has apparently been up in the Fitness Area in a group exercise class!

Earlier this week, Mom took him for his PT evaluation so that he could begin Aquatherapy on Monday.  Below are pictures of his PT, Abby, performing his evaluation.  She was very impressed with how well he has progressed given the extent of his pelvis injuries.  At this point, the goal of PT is typically to get the patient ready to go to a rehab hospital or facility.  You may remember from earlier, that he could not qualify or go to a rehab facility since he was unable to participate in actual rehab.  He needed to heal before he could begin rehab.

This is Katharine, one of Alisa's friends who is in nursing school here in Lubbock.  She stayed with Dan when Mom came to Galveston for the weekend.

Merry Christmas to all!
